Paul Samuelson 是少見的通才型天才，早年師從於經濟學大師熊彼特，是熊彼特的得意門生。不過後來接觸到凱恩斯理論後，就轉變為凱恩斯學派學者，並融合了數理方法，開創了數理經濟學領域。不過由於早年的訓練以及 Paul Samuelson 個人豐富的學養，他可不是把文章塞滿通篇的數學符號而已。這點由他寫的書就可以看得出來。

Paul Samuelson 本人也非常重視教育，他寫的基礎教科書 Economics 自 1948 年出版以來，至今已經出版到第 19 版，非常驚人。我猜可能是經濟學史上最暢銷的教科書了吧。

對 Paul Samuelson 的生平有興趣的人，可以去找找這本書《諾貝爾之路：13位經濟獎得主的故事》，裡面有收錄 Paul Samuelson 的自述，非常有趣。

ACM Fellows 2009

每年都有新的 ACM Fellows 被選出來。不過說真的，大部分的還都不太認識。

對我來說，一眼就能認出來的，大概只有 David R. Karger，Michael T. Goodrich，Shang-Hua Teng，還有 Andrew V. Goldberg。

Karger 和 Goldberg 都是做 graph algorithm 的，所以比較熟悉。Goodrich 是做 data structure 所以有點印象。至於 Shang-Hua Teng，則是因為強者我同學曾經對 smooth analysis 有過興趣，所以才知道。

我想，ACM Fellows，即使對資訊科學背景的人來說，也是非常陌生吧。除了自己領域以外的人，其實很難對名字有印象，畢竟自己能夠熟悉的東西其實很有限，而只是聽過瀏覽過的領域，要知道哪些人的確很厲害，其實也不太可能。

對我來說，ACM Fellows List 的意義，只是告訴我這個世界有多大吧。

Methodology:

"For the study, we turned our attention to those institutions that fielded at least ten high-impact reports over the five-year period," said Christopher King, editor of Science Watch. "We used this benchmark along with a subset of reports collected from Essential Science Indicators' 'Highly Cited Papers.' By doing so, we were able to compile nearly 1,300 papers with which we identified high-impact authors and journals."

姑且不論 SCI 適不適合當作評估標準，但是和 The Scientist : Best Places to Work 2009: Academia 選出來的單位比起來，好像重複的也不是很多。看來好的工作環境也未必會有好的成果，呵呵。
