  • Ref.: The Geomblog: Summer Seminars
    This is a great idea ! Usually, during the semester, I'm in market-driven mode, choosing topics that are more accessible, and are likely to draw a larger audience. But summer is a good time for harder material since you have smaller self-selected group and they're motivated.

    至於為何之前會漏唸這篇?真是天知道!而且這篇還是發在某頂尖期刊上!(不過這篇paper四張圖竟然有將近 20個作者,這... 搶功勞未免也搶得太兇了點)
    我上司也講過類似的話. 做生醫/生化的人好像都喜歡用圖表數來評估論文的份量(不是品質), 還蠻好笑的, 但我想我們資工也有類似的文化, 例如喜歡用行數來評估程式碼的份量 XD

    The past 30 or 40 years of hardware and operating-systems development seems to have only marginally impinged on the agenda in CS departments' algorithmic analysis sections, and as far as my anecdotal evidence, it has totally failed to register in the education they provide.
    ACM Queue 是一個寫個軟體工程師看的雜誌. 這篇文章的主題雖然不新, 但是的確值得我們思考. 不過其實這玩意也早就有人在做了, 只是這位工程師並不清楚而已.

    Because they came for U.S. rather than PhD degrees, nearly 25 students from my graduating class (in India) went for PhD in USA (Chem Engg. not CS though). And 80% of them went for the 25k$ Stipend and a chance to live in USA (and to become future US citizens).
    老實說, 在學術界開發這些東西, 業界的 credit 很低, 雖然說這些東西很有趣, 但是能夠提升多少專業程度? 除非是做系統之類的研究團隊, 否則我想對業界人員來說, 應該不是什麼特別看重的經歷. 以 Luis von Ahn 的成名作 reCAPTCHA 來說, 創意似乎比工程難度重要. 但是這些薪資水準比較低的國家, 他們的工業不會是這種型態. 做這些工作, 對工程師的資歷來說似乎不是很加值.
